What types of animals do you have?

At Chillicothe Animal Shelter, we always have dogs and cats who need homes! Sometimes we have other domestic animals like guinea pigs and hamsters! Check out our Animals page for a list of animals available for adoption.

When are you open?

Chillicothe Animal Shelter is open Monday-Saturday from 9 AM - 4 PM. Sundays are by appointment only. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no walk-ins. Visits are by appointment only. To set up an appointment, please call 660.646.1006.

How much does it cost to adopt an animal?

All dogs have a $150 adoption fee. Cats vary in price.

What is included in the adoption fee?

  • Spay/neuter

  • Microchip

  • All vaccinations (including rabies, for dogs)

  • Heartworm testing, preventative Bordatella, fecals (dogs)

  • Ear check, Frontline for fleas, Heartguard for heartworm (dogs)

What is the adoption process?

The adoption process at Chillicothe Animal Shelter is very simple. 

  1. Complete an application.

  2. Shelter Guardian reviews application to ensure that the animal has a safe, healthy, and loving “forever” home.

  3. After the application is processed and approved, the animal is spayed/neutered (if it isn’t already) and all vaccinations are boosted.

  4. Pick-up is arranged to meet at Chillicothe Animal Shelter.

  5. Cash or checks are accepted. No credit cards.

While this is a simple process, please keep in mind it can take several days or more for the adoption process to be complete, especially if the animal needs to visit the veterinarian. We appreciate your patience!

Are you licensed?

Chillicothe Animal Shelter is a licensed shelter. Chillicothe Animal Shelter is owned and operated by the Livingston County Humane Society which is a 501(c)(3).

How do you handle vaccinations and spaying/neutering?

Chillicothe Animal Shelter works with two veterinarians in Chillicothe, Missouri, regarding vaccinations and spaying/neutering. Not all animals are already spayed and neutered, but some are.

Yes! If you are concerned about any animal’s well-being located in Livingston County, Missouri, please call us! We assist the local authorities to ensure all animals are cared for properly. All tips are kept anonymous.
